Trump and Mike Johnson push back on calls to slow AI development

US President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson have distanced themselves from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's proposal to slow AI development. The Verge reports that both fear a pause could let China pull ahead of the US. According to the Financial Times, Trump said the US leads China in AI and that he wants to keep it that way.

Johnson said on CNN that rushing to restrict AI development could be a national security threat. He added that if Congress moved to regulate AI in an emergency session, the US would lose the race to China. Amodei's proposal had drawn support within the industry. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk backed it publicly on X, and Alphabet's Demis Hassabis offered tentative support.
